Chemical Treatment of Turfgrass

This document describes current turf maintenance practices at the University of Connecticut's main campus at Storrs, Depot Campus, and athletic facilities. It is not intended as a formal statement of Integrated Pest Management practices at UConn, but rather as a general description of chemical maintenance of turfgrass at the University.

Turf maintenance is handled on the main and Depot campuses by UConn's Department of Facilities Operations: Landscape and Building Services, Unit 3252 (Manager: Dave Lotreck, phone: 860-486-3591).
Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals described are available from Dave Lotreck at Facilities Operations Bldg.

Athletic facilities are handled by Athletic Grounds, phone: 860-486-4872.

All products are applied according to manufacturer's specifications and by licensed pesticide applicators. Pesticides listed are those that may be used; products are applied only as needed, and not all products are applied each year. For more details, consult the University's Integrated Pest Management Plan, available from Dave Lotreck.

TruGreen ChemLawn (business registration #B0151), based in Rocky Hill, CT (Supervisor: Paul Muhlberg, certification #S1264) is currently the contractor that handles pesticide and fertilizer applications (phone: 800-662-9270). http://www.trugreen.com/tg/homepage.dsp

Main and Depot Campuses

1. FERTILIZER USE

  • LESCO Green Flo Liquid Fertilizer (16-2-5) applied mechanically to Core Campus twice yearly- in mid-April, early fall.
  • Applied between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. to minimize exposure to campus community.
  • Not applied in Swan Lake area, or within paved walkway/ Rt. 195 sidewalk envelope encircling Mirror Lake.

2. PESTICIDE USE

Herbicides and Fungicides

  • Curative spot applications only. No blanket or preventative applications.
  • Turf is scouted by Facilities Operations, areas with broadleaf weed or fungal infestation identified.
  • All chemical applications by TruGreen ChemLawn.
  • Applications done at night, flags and notices posted for required periods as state law dictates.
  • Severe crabgrass infestations may be treated chemically as needed.
  • Monsanto Roundup Pro used for total vegetative control. Applied under bleachers, in stone areas, and along fence lines.

Insecticides

  • Curative spot applications only. No blanket or preventative applications.
  • When Facilities Operations or TruGreen observes pest damage, Facilities Operations makes judgment that infestation warrants pesticide application; TruGreen applies pesticides.
  • Application done at night, flags and notices posted for required periods.
  • Insecticides rarely needed on main campus, though occasional grub infestations require treatment. Talstar One available for surface insects; Merit 75 WSP used for subsurface insects.

Athletics

Athletics Grounds Crew and TruGreen ChemLawn handle pest control for Athletics.

1. FERTILIZER USE

  • LESCO granular fertilizer (25-3-8) with 30-75% slow-release nitrogen applied to athletic fields twice yearly on practice fields, and 3-4 times yearly on competition fields.

2. PESTICIDE USE

  • Curative spot applications only for all pest/disease/weed problems. No preventative or blanket applications.
  • Athletic Grounds, TruGreen scout fields regularly between April and November. Any insect, weed, or fungal problems on competition fields treated immediately. Major infestations on practice fields also treated immediately; minor infestations on practice fields given 3-4 days to clear, if persist, are then treated.

Fungicides and Herbicides

  • Syngenta Barricade 4FL used on emergent crabgrass; Agrevo Acclaim used to treat post-emergence crabgrass.
  • Monsanto Roundup Pro used for total vegetative control. Applied under bleachers, in stone areas, and along fence lines.

Insecticides

  • Talstar One available for surface insects; Merit 75 WSP used for subsurface insects.
