Power Plant Operator Trainee (7 Positions)

Position Summary

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department, Storrs Campus, has seven job openings for Power Plant Operator Trainee positions. The Co-Generation Plant produces high-pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water to supply energy to the Storrs campus.  The plant has three 7 MW Solar combustion turbines as well as a 5 MW steam turbine and associated support equipment. In addition, a new Supplemental Utility Plant has been brought online this year.

These positions will receive on-the-job training in order to complete the requirements of a Power Plant Operator 1 job classification within a period of time not to exceed two years. These are permanent, full time positions working rotating days/shifts; five (5) teams of three (3) persons rotate working eight (8) hour weekdays and twelve (12) hour weekends. This is often called the “8 Plus 12 Plan”.

These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends or holidays). Applicants must possess a current motor vehicle operator license. Applicants must be lawfully permitted to work in the United States.

A full benefits package including medical and dental insurance is available. These positions may be eligible for weekend and shift differential.

Position Summary

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has two job openings for Skilled Trades Apprentice (Utilities) positions at the Storrs Campus. The Skilled Trades Apprentice (Utilities) positions are permanent, full-time, 37.5 hours/week positions. The work schedule is 1st Shift, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an unpaid half an hour for lunch. The hourly rate of pay is $30.33 and is non-negotiable.

Position Summary

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has six current job openings, and anticipated job openings*, for QCW HVACR positions.  These are permanent, full-time, positions 37.5 hours per week. The hourly salary is $30.33/hour and is non-negotiable. These positions offer a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance. The 2nd shift positions are eligible for shift differential. Weekend differential is applied to hours worked on Saturday or Sunday if the entire 7.5-hour shift is worked.

Position Summary

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has three job openings for Skilled Trades Apprentice Plumbing and Steamfitting positions.  These positions will receive on-the-job training and vocational education in order to complete the requirements of a QCW Plumbing and Steamfitting job classification within a period of time normally not to exceed two years. The Skilled Trades Apprentice Plumbing and Steamfitting job classification requires a P-2 plumbing license to be obtained normally within the two-year period. The P-2 license must be maintained throughout employment with the University once promoted to the QCW Plumbing and Steamfitting job classification.

These Skilled Trades Apprentice Plumbing and Steamfitting positions are permanent, full-time, 1st Shift positions, 37.5 hours/week, with a work schedule of Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The hourly salary is $24.01 and is non-negotiable.

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has one job opening for a Skilled Trades Apprentice (Automotive and Mechanical Equipment) position at the Storrs Campus.  This position will receive on-the-job training and vocational education in order to complete the requirements of a QCW Automotive and Mechanical Equipment job classification within a period of time normally not to exceed two years.

This Skilled Trades Apprentice (Automotive and Mechanical Equipment) position is a permanent, full-time, 1st Shift position, 40 hours/week, with a work schedule of Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (with a 30-minute unpaid lunch).  This position offers a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance. The hourly salary is $23.43 and is non-negotiable. Please note, the hourly salary is anticipated to increase, effective July 1, 2022.
