UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has a job opening for a Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Automotive) position within the Motor Pool Shop.  This is a permanent, full-time, 1st shift position, with a work schedule of Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week with an unpaid half an hour for lunch.  The hourly rate of pay will be determined based on the employee’s current Step and Pay Plan.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS

    This class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and systems.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard electrical trade practices and codes;
    • Lays out and installs electrical conduit for power and lighting;
    • Makes repairs to electrical motors, controllers, switchboard panels, traffic lights, lights, power circuits, ventilating fans, electronic counting and traffic control devices, intercommunication systems and electrical generators;
    • Installs open and concealed wiring and lighting fixtures;
    • Maintains and repairs unit heaters, fans, building maintenance machines and equipment, gas pumps, refrigeration units, diesel electric generators, movable bridges, fire alarm systems, etc.;
    • Repairs relays and switches;
    • Rewires motors;
    • Bends pipes;
    • Installs, repairs and maintains oil burners;
    • Performs necessary safety testing of electrical equipment and keeps required records;

    • May diagnose failures and repair drilling and patching to facilitate installations;

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
    • At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.
    • Experience performing technical duties within the electrical trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut E-1 or E-2 license.
    2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
    3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Five or more years of experience in the electrical field.

    3. Two years of High Voltage experience.
    4. Experience in various lighting control systems such as Crestron, nLight and/or Lutron.
    1. Knowledge of and experience working with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), preferably AiM.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

    3. Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, and pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates.

Must be able to lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces.     • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating and refrigeration;
    • Operates, maintains, repairs, installs, modifies and assembles air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon or chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means;
    • Determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas;
    • Uses and interprets a psychometric chart;
    • Controls and measures air flow, room air changes and room pressurizing;
    • Monitors computerized control systems;
    • Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks;
    • Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers;
    • Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;
    • Keeps necessary records;
    • In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area;
    • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;
    • May install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment;
    • May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations;
    • May remove pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods;
    • May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;
    • May operate heavy equipment;
    • May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Ice Rink Manager, the Assistant Ice Rink Manager assists with the operation and maintenance of ice rinks at the UConn Storrs campus. This position assists with planning and scheduling routine and corrective maintenance for the rink facility, including the rink playing surface as well as support and spectator areas.

     

    Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Assists with management and coordination of maintenance operations to the ice rink at the Storrs campus.
    • Ensures appropriate operating condition of mechanical systems associated with making and maintaining the ice playing surface as well as general building operating systems.
    • Ensures appropriate operating condition and suitability of ice playing surface equipment.
    • As directed by the Ice Rink Manager, use independent judgement and policy guideline standards to implement new operational methodologies, practices, technologies, and strategies to enhance or improve operational productivity or departmental proficiencies.
    • Assists the Ice Rink Manager with planning and managing rink facilities and maintenance budget.
    • Communicates and enforces all ice rink rules and regulations to ensure safe operating conditions for staff, patrons, and spectators.
    • Works with UConn Athletics Department, UConn Recreation, as well as external customers to prioritize and schedule use of the playing surface for games, practices, and public skating events.
    • Hires, trains, and supervises student and special payroll staff to meet operational needs.
    • Assists in supervising and monitoring skate rental and skate sharpening services during applicable events.
    • Performs related duties as required.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor’s degree in related field and one to two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the degree and years requirement.
    2. Current knowledge of ice rink operations including skating surface production and maintenance.
    3. Experience operating an ice resurfacing machine such as a Zamboni or Olympia.
    4. Must have the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication with a diverse audience both internal and external to the University.
    5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and identify and resolve problems efficiently and effectively.
    6. Strong organizational skills including the ability to regularly set and manage time-sensitive priorities and work efficiently under critical deadlines while handling tasks simultaneously.
    7. Must be proficient in the use of computers and have skills in MS Office applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, electronic mail, internet applications and computerized maintenance management software programs.

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Experience in NCAA hockey or similar venue operations.
    2. Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate varying operational needs.
    3. Experience maintaining and managing budgets, records and data reporting.
    4. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make decisions in a timely and professional manner.

     

    Physical Requirements:

    • Incumbent will be required to drive and operate an Olympia (Zamboni).
    • Incumbent must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry, and push material weighing up to 75 lbs.

     

    Working Conditions:

    • Incumbent may be standing or walking a good part of the day with exposure to cold and noisy conditions.

    INTRODUCTION

    UConn’s Facilities Operations Department, Storrs Campus, has three job openings for Power Plant Operator 2 positions. The Co-Generation Plant produces high-pressure superheated steam, electrical power and chilled water to supply energy to the Storrs campus. The plant has three 7 MW Solar combustion turbines as well as a 5 MW steam turbine and associated support equipment.  In addition, a new Supplemental Utility Plant has been brought online and four chillers are operational within the facility, and one boiler will be going through commissioning soon. Operators will also be responsible for performing tasks at the South Campus Geothermal System and Chiller Plant that is currently under construction and expected to be operating in late 2027.

    These positions are permanent, full time positions working rotating days/shifts; ten (10) teams of four (4) persons rotate working eight (8) hour weekdays and twelve (12) hour weekends. This is often called the “8 Plus 12 Plan”.
