INTRODUCTION

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department, Storrs Campus, has three job openings for Power Plant Operator 2 positions. The Co-Generation Plant produces high-pressure superheated steam, electrical power and chilled water to supply energy to the Storrs campus. The plant has three 7 MW Solar combustion turbines as well as a 5 MW steam turbine and associated support equipment.  In addition, a new Supplemental Utility Plant has been brought online and four chillers are operational within the facility, and one boiler will be going through commissioning soon. Operators will also be responsible for performing tasks at the South Campus Geothermal System and Chiller Plant that is currently under construction and expected to be operating in late 2027.

These positions are permanent, full time positions working rotating days/shifts; ten (10) teams of four (4) persons rotate working eight (8) hour weekdays and twelve (12) hour weekends. This is often called the “8 Plus 12 Plan”.   • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard masonry trade practices and codes;

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled masonry trades.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties within the masonry trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience working with a variety of concrete mixes.
  2. Experience with respirator fit testing and training.
  3. Experience with drainage principles, including trenching, shoring and pipe installation.
  4. Extensive knowledge and experience with masonry tools, equipment and techniques.
  5. Ability to read blueprints and drawings.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Demonstrated experience with assisting in the creation of chimneys, walls, frames, walkways and other structures that would be common in the Masonry trade.
  8. Experience with different types of through-wall flashing systems.
  9. Completion of a masonry apprenticeship.
  10. Four years of commercial/industrial masonry experience.

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate valid current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to attend technical seminars or courses.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  4. Applicants must have a current motor vehicle operator license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  2. A physical examination may be required.
  3. Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, and pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates.
  4. Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces. Must be able to perform inspections, alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities.  Must be able to perform job duties in areas both internal, external and adjacent to buildings, along with performing repairs to areas located outdoors, on the grounds of campus, to sidewalks, retaining walls etc.  Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize tools, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.
  2. The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
  3. Incumbents in this class will be required to complete annual respirator fit testing and training.
  4. Incumbents in this class will be required to complete silica testing every three years consisting of a Silica Physical, Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT), Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) and a Chest X-Ray with B Read.
